Time Travel: Things You Didn’t Know

strange time travel stories

Have you ever wondered if time travel is even actual? How much truth is depicted in the movies and books we read? Well, let’s explore the possibilities of time travel in detail. Time travel has always been an intriguing topic of discussion among enthusiasts of science and philosophers. It has inspired countless works of science fiction and philosophical speculation. From a scientific perspective, time travel is a concept rooted in relativity, quantum mechanics, and spacetime theories. While traveling through time remains theoretical and has not been proven possible with current scientific understanding, researchers continue to explore the possibilities and implications of such a phenomenon. We often watch science fiction characters using giant machines and wormholes to time travel in the future or the past, and wonder if a wormhole exists or if someone is building a machine somewhere in the basement. While the debate continues over whether traveling into the past is possible, physicists have determined that traveling to the future most certainly is. There are many popular theories and mind-bending possibilities of time traveling.

Time Travel: Theories to Wonder

History of Time Travel

In 1861, the scientist William Robert Grove came up with a thought experiment of a “chronoscope” to observe the past, and in 1895, H.G. Wells wrote The Time Machine, which influenced the concept of time travel. In the 20th century, Albert Einstein’s views on relativity turned the fantasy of traveling through time into a viable scientific concept. Einstein’s work of the time was disclosed to be not absolute and fixed, but rather, it can be changed by various factors like velocity and gravity. The newfound possibility of time travel ignited an interest among physicists who seriously contemplated the mechanics of going to the past or future.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity

Einstein developed a theory of special relativity and later expanded it into the theory of general relativity. Special relativity describes the relationship between space and time for objects moving at constant speeds in a straight line. So, in layperson’s terms, firstly, no such thing exists as an ultimate frame of reference. Secondly, the speed of light is constant, but the speed of any object relative to an observer depends on its speed and direction of travel. Finally, nothing can go faster than the speed of light. These fundamental concepts directly affect actual lifetime travel. A person flying through space at a high speed will have a smaller amount of time compared to another person not going through space.

The Grandfather Paradox

This paradox questions how time travel can affect reality. It asks what if someone went back in time and killed his grandfather before their parents were born. Would the time traveler vanish, or would another universe/world be created to keep the chronology intact? Many theorists assume that time travel won’t let you change history but instead create a parallel or branching timeline. Every decision made in time travel can create a new timeline or universe. This concept of a parallel universe is fascinating as it suggests an infinite number of versions of ourselves and our world could exist simultaneously, each on its distinct timeline.

Novikov and Kip’s Theory

Science began to take time travel seriously in the 1980s. 1990, Russian physicist Igor Novikov and American physicist Kip Thorne collaborated on a research paper about closed time-like curves. The Novikov self-consistency principle is a concept in theoretical physics, particularly in the study of time travel and causality. It was proposed by the Russian physicist Igor Dmitriyevich Novikov. The principle suggests that if an event can cause a paradox in the past, the probability of that event occurring is zero. In other words, the principle asserts that the laws of physics prevent any action that would create a time paradox. This idea is often used in science fiction discussions about time travel and thought experiments related to the nature of causality.

Time Warp and the Butterfly Effect

Time warps is a concept where it is believed that the flow of time is disrupted or altered somehow. In time warps, time moves slower than usual. Time warps are portals that travel to the future, the past, or an alternate universe. This concept might lead to actual time travel in the future. Butterfly effect: the beating of a butterfly’s wings in the past might follow up with a devastating storm in the future. Considering time travel in this sense means that any minor changes that occurred in the past, even such a minor incident as a meeting with a stranger, throwing a piece of paper, or accidentally killing someone, can have significant and unexpected outcomes in the future.

Technology Challenges

Time travel is the source of countless mind-boggling philosophical and theoretical issues, but to produce a workable time machine, many practical challenges must be overcome. Einstein’s theory of relativity may lead to time travel if we can make this technological and practical. The primary issue is massive power consumption. The equations of Einstein indicate that travel to the past would be possible only if a massive amount of energy is needed to create a wormhole/the geometry of “chrono-space” time is bent. However, estimates extend the range of energy requirements to 100% of the entire energy consumption for human civilization. Therefore, we still need more technical advancements to channel that much power. Not only is it hard to realize a perfectly working time machine, but even the most sophisticated engineering technology needs to be adequate to perform it.

Nevertheless, there are a lot of scientists who came up with the idea of a time machine, including engineers and inventors who presented various designs to travel in time by using wormholes, particles called “tachyons” which can run faster than the speed of light that are believed to be able to provide a way to expand the core of matter and make a one-person machine which can somehow teleport in the past. But at present, these remain futuristic scenarios with no clear proof. As of right now, functional time travel is still beyond the realm of science.

Strange Stories of Time Travel

John Titor, The Man from The Future

In 2000, John Titor began to talk about time travel on the internet. The man claimed that he was from the future, 2036, where the world was devastated due to the war between the US and Russia, and only a few people survived. He came back to retrieve some items to restore humanity. He specifically asked for an IBM 5100 computer, which was yet to be released to the public, and only the creators of the computer knew it. He disappeared after 4 months.

A Man From a country that never exists

In July 1954, a man came to Tokyo International Airport. Something strange happened on the check-in counter when he gave his passport to be stamped. The country that issued the passport was Taured—a country that never existed. During interrogation, the man said that the country existed between France and Spain. The man knew many languages as well. Later, he disappeared mysteriously. The story became so popular that a novel was written a few years later.

Hutton and Brandt

In 1932, two German newspaper reporters visited the Hamburg-Altona shipyards to study a story. However, their tour was relatively uneventful until bombs started to fall from the sky right in the middle of the tour of the yard. For Hutton and Brandt, the memory of bombs falling near them and then them running away was the most striking. The guys had taken pictures of the place, but they showed nothing when the pictures were developed. Thus, the men’s stories were questioned. The paper’s editor did not publish the story, and the event was forgotten. Nevertheless, 11 years later, in 1943, he opened a newspaper to see that the Royal Air Force squadron had executed a successful air raid on the shipyard. However, according to him, he portrayed the scene of devastation perfectly, as described in 1932.

Conclusion

Time Travel is a mysterious and relatively uncharted concept in the scientific world. Many theories and strange phenomena make us wonder about the possibility of time travel. Although possible physical time travel might remain just in the realm of extract of science fiction for a few years, the theoretical and conceptual work of physicists, philosophers, and those working with the future will break the limits of human consciousness. The only true discovery one can make through space travel is a future with more revelations and breakthroughs. We may learn how to decipher the rules of the timestream, and we will be able to move freely within the past, present, and future. However, exploring and discovering the exciting prospects of time travel is still possible. These different topics will fuel our imagination and test our most fundamental assumptions about the nature of reality. Time traveling is an adventure through uncharted territory – the story of the unknown.
